Graham dropped by Wiki Jango’s music studio whilst it was in a state of refurbishment and was offered the chance to paint in it before the builders came. Without any painting materials to hand, he cut a large sheet of carpet from the floor and hung it to the ceiling. Climbed into the building’s loft and found some buckets of ancient paint. The scarce paint supply was topped-up with yellow sand or red brick dust for colouration and further texture.
Wiki Jango is seen (with a dust mask on) playing drums whilst Graham improvises an abstract composition in response to his rhythm. This is the one and only filmed performance of them together in the earliest incarnation of ‘Rhythm And Paint’ before Jonas Golland replaced Wiki.
Only the earliest stages of the painting were filmed and have been sped up for our viewing pleasure. The finished painting is shown at the end of this film, and the photographic records show ‘Primal Steps’ to be an impressive work of art. Under the name ‘Private Plebs’, Jonas Golland’s ‘Universal Credit Crunch’ is the overdubbed audio track of this video.
Please note, the painting ‘Primal Steps’ is owned by a private collector
‘PRIMAL STEPS’, paint on carpet, 120 cm x 180 cm, 2008.
