"Graham paints from within, his practice is all about inner exploration, and a kind of worship I think of creative processes that he is continuously exploring and working to make sense of. Making his profound approach known through painting, he aligns himself with the legacy of groundbreaking 20th century painters, even musicians, and this sense of place is a working and inspiring environment for him…"
Graham's artistic traits are deeply personal and were developed over many years of exploration, with inspirations ranging from Van Gogh to Hockney to Mondrian. His longtime art studio in Hackney Wick serves as an open laboratory for new ideas and new visitors to propagate in equal measure, and his keen interest in understanding his subjects lends itself to creating tailored pieces of work. Graham as an artist I highly recommend to provide you with a responsive yet unique perspective infused with years of art theory and experience.
Graham Duncan Elder produces big, bold, abstract and well executed art from a range of observations notably the human form. I have known Graham for many years and seen his evolution as an artist from the early stages in school to the present day. Graham is a very conscious human being also and is very engaged into the world around him which inspires his day-to-day art. Please do have a look at his work which I find very inspiring and has much depth.
Graham is more than an artist for me, he has been a journey companion over the years we have been sharing a Studio in Hackney Wick. In this time, I was able to experience his passion and dedication to art and in particular painting. Graham's art is real and honest, it is about representing on canvas his real feeling, life experience, emotions, people he meets, and by giving the painting a strong texture, which I personally love very much, I can feel his passion. He has been growing through art, and I found very interesting his last experimentation on big canvases. His paintings are particularly vibrant, and I feel a special and strong energy coming from them.
I find Graham's paintings to be thought provoking. His portrait paintings are very mysterious, such as in ‘Red Green Teen’, which appears like a mask over an individual’s face and at the same time the expressive mark making and colour creates a sense of mood which might convey the person’s personality. His landscapes are mainly large scale and are eye-catching. The geometric shapes and lines make me feel as if I am being pushed through a tunnel going towards another dimension (‘Plane Spatial Semblance’, and ‘Autumnal Nights’).
Graham’s art is such a brilliant innovation, and the quality of the work is sublimely subversive because it’s a lot about self-introspection and the artist is not afraid to align with the importance of mental health-themed pieces through a journey of self-discovery. It is not something that I have seen many other artists do and divulge. Graham’s work is a game changer…
