‘DRUMMING AND PAINTING EVENT’ POSTER/FLYER’

A poster/flyer promoting one of Rhythm And Paint’s
workshop/performances at South Friern Barnet library.
This a good example of a promotion campaign to
encourage their art and music education in the community.

Although ‘WET DEVIL’ was painted at a different event to
the one advertised on this flyer, this is my favourite poster
design. Graham’s eye-catching photomontage bordered
with vertical diamond text!

‘WET DEVIL’: a video documentary of the day that ‘Wet Devil’ was painted

Following Rhythm And Paint’s triumphant performance at the Hackney Wicked Festival 2010, they were invited to East Barnet Village Library to deliver workshops that would encourage public participation in art and music’s creative synergy.  Joined by a percussive circle and guitarists, Jonas (drums) and Graham (paint) performed to camera.  ‘Wet Devil’ is the finished painting from the afternoon’s workshop/performance.  The footage shows the two of them doing their respected practices in the sunshine with a breeze blowing, then quickly removing the canvas from the wall as heavy rain stopped play!  Graham rolled-up his wet painting, placed it under an outdoor stone staircase, and collected it the next day.  To our delight the painting was in good condition, so he stretched it onto a frame and signed it finished.

‘SEMIOTIC SONG’ POSTER/FLYER

A poster/flyer promoting one of Rhythm and Paint’s
performances at Hackney Wicked Festival 2009. This
advert was revamped and used again for the show that
spawned ‘Musical Storm’ (the painting), but was under
our preferred title of ‘Sound Semiology’

‘MUSICAL STORM’: a video that features footage of both ‘Musical Storm’ and ‘Out of The Street into the Jungle’ being painted

Rhythm And Paint did two street performances in the summer of 2009, firstly at the Hackney Wicked Festival, then at ‘HW Sunday Street Market’. Some of the surviving film from both shows are placed back-to-back in this movie, entitled Musical Storm’ (Version 1). Graham is seen painting, ‘Out of The Street into The Jungle’ a multi-coloured excursion into improvised painting that left audience members covered in acrylic!

Then comes a little recording of Graham creating Musical Storm a black and white action painting showstopper. A gusty gale turned him into a hurricane flinging everything at his canvas! The audio recorded at both performances was not of high fidelity, so this movie has been overdubbed with an electronic tune, entitled ‘Inside the Victory’ by Andrew Locke (‘The Oracle Model’).

Please note that ‘Out of The Street into The Jungle’ is now owned by a private collector, but Musical Stormis available for sale below

MUSICAL STORM

£2,500.00

A day of windy weather took this canvas sailing through Sunday. The street band played bebop as the paint flew onto the canvas in a storm of action.

‘Thrilled Face, Sore Heart’: Above, is a video document of the nights that ‘Thrilled Face, Sore Heart’ and ‘Thrilled Face, Sore Heart 2’ were painted.

The A Band took over the main stage at the Supernormal Festival, the huge ensemble of multi-instrumentalists is heard yelling and hollering into the endless night. Graham is beside them, painting under the dark sky as the rain washes away most of the paint from his canvas. Although predominately red in colour, it had gone through many permutations before he deserted the sodden canvas. Gallons of acrylic slithered from the canvas to the ground, this video shows Graham’s final attempts to create an image that stuck.

The existing film footage from both shows is placed back-to-back in this movie, entitled ‘Thrilled Face, Sore Heart’. At the end of this movie, Graham is seen briefly painting, ‘Thrilled Face, Sore Heart’. This multi-coloured, yet very green painting was improvised to live rock music in front of a packed house at ‘Elevator Gallery’. One of Graham’s finest hours was marred by a spectator who lifted the wet painting before splatting it against the white gallery wall. Graham had turned his back in celebration but found himself in a brawl! However, he promptly reworked the smudged areas of paint whilst writing a poem expressing his feelings about the vandal. Both the painting and the poem are displayed at the end of this film. Only the audio recorded at the ‘Supernormal 2010’ performance remains and is played throughout this entire video.

Please note that ‘Thrilled Face, Sore Heart 2’ did not survive the deluge, but ‘Thrilled Face, Sore Heart’ is available for sale below

THRILLED FACE, SORE HEART

£2,500.00

Painted to live music in the hot Friday night fires of the Elevator Gallery, the crazed audience danced and leered towards me as I went full throttle at this canvas. With my back turned, the painting was defaced by a vicious spectator; see my poem of the same title in response.

     ‘DOPPLEGANG’ FLYER/POSTER

Dopplegang is an invented word by Jonas for the name of his
music band circa 2009/2010. The title is taken from the
German word doppelgänger meaning an apparition or double
of a living person. This event was not filmed, but its poster
illustrates the dynamics of our painting and music
collaborations that feature in the ‘Dream Sequence’ video.

‘DREAM SEQUENCE’: a showreel that displays a selection of Graham’s artworks, layering them with photos and footage of him painting. Film of his musician and dancer friends are also in this mix

Graham and Andrew Locke were keen to create a ‘dream sequence’ together through the medium of film. This video starts in the sunshine of R.E.M and ends with the nightmarish image of Captain Beefheart in purgatory. This selection of Graham’s artworks mostly harks back to the hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt but also tries to evoke even more primitive forms of scribing and sculpture. The audio track of this video is entitled, ‘Square Pattern’ by Andrew Locke (‘The Oracle Model’).

Please contact us using the link below if you are interested in any of the artworks featured in the ‘Dream Sequence’:

RED HIEROGLYPHS 1

£300.00

Improvised gestures in red ink that were inspired by the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt. I rapidly drew these symbols whilst listening to the album ‘ሙላቱ አስታጥቄ – Mulatu Astatqé – Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale: 1969-1974’ with the incredible Pharaonic antiquities and scribes swirling through my mind.

PRIMAL STEPS’: a video document of the night ‘Primal Steps’ was painted

Graham dropped by Wiki Jango’s music studio whilst it was in a state of refurbishment and was offered the chance to paint in it before the builders came. Without any painting materials to hand, he cut a large sheet of carpet from the floor and hung it to the ceiling. Climbed into the building’s loft and found some buckets of ancient paint. The scarce paint supply was topped-up with yellow sand or red brick dust for colouration and further texture.

Wiki Jango is seen (with a dust mask on) playing drums whilst Graham improvises an abstract composition in response to his rhythm. This is the one and only filmed performance of them together in the earliest incarnation of ‘Rhythm And Paint’ before Jonas Golland replaced Wiki.

Only the earliest stages of the painting were filmed and have been sped up for our viewing pleasure. The finished painting is shown at the end of this film, and the photographic records show ‘Primal Steps’ to be an impressive work of art. Under the name ‘Private Plebs’, Jonas Golland’s ‘Universal Credit Crunch’ is the overdubbed audio track of this video.

Please note, the painting ‘Primal Steps’ is owned by a private collector
